3D Paper Models: Cut, Fold, and Assemble

3D paper models (also called papercraft) go one step beyond origami: instead of folding a single sheet, you assemble several pieces into a standing structure. Houses, robots, and fantasy builds are the most rewarding projects, and they introduce a whole new toolkit of skills.

Tools and materials

  • Cardstock (200-250 gsm) — heavy enough to stand, light enough to cut.
  • Cutting mat, craft knife, and metal ruler — for clean, straight cuts.
  • White glue or a glue stick — PVA for strong joints, glue stick for quick tabs.
  • Bone folder or scoring tool — to score fold lines so panels bend crisply.

How to get the best result

Work in this order: cut all pieces, score every fold line, fold everything, then assemble. Cutting everything first keeps you in one rhythm; scoring before folding prevents torn cardstock. Glue tabs one at a time and let each dry before handling the next.

Where to begin

Start with a simple geometric build like the box to practice scoring and tab gluing. Then move to a house, which adds walls, a roof, and a base. Try the robot once you are comfortable — it is our most detailed build and a fantastic display piece. For inspiration and design ideas, browse our gallery of AI-generated papercraft designs.

3D models FAQ

Why won't my model stand? The base needs to be flat and the tabs need full contact with glue — press firmly for a few seconds.
