Free printable envelopes solve the age-old problem of having a beautiful card but no matching envelope. Instead of settling for a plain white envelope that clashes with your handcrafted card, print a custom envelope in any color, pattern, or size you need. Printable envelopes are perfect for greeting cards, invitations, thank-you notes, and personal letters — they add a thoughtful, handmade touch that store-bought envelopes cannot match.

Paper choices for envelopes

Envelopes need paper that is sturdy enough to hold its shape but thin enough to fold cleanly — 120–160 gsm paper is ideal. Regular printer paper (80–100 gsm) works for temporary envelopes but is too flimsy for mailing. Cardstock (200+ gsm) is too thick for envelope folds — the paper will crack at the creases and the envelope will not lie flat. Patterned paper, scrapbook paper, or even newspaper and magazine pages create unique, eye-catching envelopes. For mailing, use plain or lightly patterned paper — busy patterns can confuse postal sorting machines. Always check that your printed envelope meets your country postal size and weight requirements before mailing.

Folding a printable envelope

Most printable envelope templates follow the same basic folding pattern. Start by cutting out the envelope shape along solid lines. Score all dashed fold lines with a bone folder or the back of a spoon — this makes the folds crisp and prevents cracking. Fold the two side flaps inward toward the center, then fold the bottom flap up. Apply glue to the side flaps and press the bottom flap over them — hold for 10 seconds to let the glue set. The top flap remains unsealed — this is where you insert the card and seal the envelope. For a clean seal, use a glue stick, a damp sponge, or a sticker seal. Avoid using too much glue — it can warp the paper and show through.

Sizing guide for common cards

A2 cards (4.25 × 5.5 inches) fit in A2 envelopes (4.375 × 5.75 inches). A7 cards (5 × 7 inches) fit in A7 envelopes (5.25 × 7.25 inches). A6 cards (4.5 × 6.25 inches) fit in A6 envelopes (4.75 × 6.5 inches). Square cards (5 × 5 or 6 × 6 inches) require square envelopes, which may cost extra to mail. When in doubt, make the envelope slightly larger than the card — a card that fits snugly is better than one that rattles around. If you are mailing an envelope with a card inside, take it to the post office to have it weighed and postage calculated — non-standard sizes and shapes may require additional postage.

Decorating and personalizing envelopes

A decorated envelope makes getting mail feel like a special occasion. Address the envelope with beautiful handwriting — brush lettering, calligraphy, or even neat cursive elevates any envelope. Add a wax seal for an elegant, old-fashioned touch — wax seal stamps are affordable and come in hundreds of designs. Use colorful stamps or washi tape to decorate the envelope flap. For holiday mail, add a small sticker or hand-drawn doodle in the corner. For wedding invitations, print the addresses in a matching font and add a liner to the envelope for a luxurious, layered look. The envelope is the first thing the recipient sees — make it count.
