Materials

  • 1 rectangular sheet of paper (A4 or Letter)
  • Flat surface

Step-by-step Instructions

1. Fold in Half

Start with a rectangular paper. Fold it in half from top to bottom (short edges together).

Step 1 — fold the rectangle in half

2. Fold Corners Down

Fold the top two corners down to meet at the center, forming a triangle at the top with a rectangle below.

Step 2 — fold the top corners to the center

3. Fold Bottom Flaps

Fold the bottom rectangle flaps upward on both sides, one on front and one on back.

Step 3 — fold the bottom flaps up both sides

4. Form the Hat Shape

Tuck the corner flaps into each other. Then open the shape from the bottom and squash it into a square diamond.

Step 4 — open and squash into a square diamond

5. Fold Up Again

Fold the bottom corner of the diamond up to the top on both sides, creating a smaller triangle. Open and squash again into a smaller square.

Step 5 — fold the bottom corners up both sides

6. Open the Boat

Gently pull the two top flaps apart to open the boat shape. Flatten the bottom slightly so it stands upright. Your boat is ready to float!

Step 6 — open the boat shape

Pro Tips

  • Use wax paper or waterproof it with crayons for longer floating
  • Make a fleet of boats in different colors
  • Add a toothpick mast with a paper sail
